Mark Twain said, “Wisdom is the reward you get for a lifetime of listening when you'd have preferred to talk.”
In today’s corporate culture “the best Idea wins!” Often that means that everyone goes around the table and speaks their mind, giving their solution to a problem. However, many of us are spending the time our colleagues are speaking, crafting our own response. In one-on-one meetings we are doing the same thing. Effective communication is the foundation of a healthy and productive work environment - but in many ways it is the linch pin to so much more. One key skill often overlooked is active listening.
Active listening involves fully concentrating, understanding, and only THEN responding thoughtfully to what others are saying. It fosters trust, reduces misunderstandings, and promotes collaboration.
When we listen actively, we demonstrate value and respect for our colleagues' perspectives, we create a more inclusive and engaged workplace. By the simple act of using "active listening" and not preparing a reply at the same time, we increase the other person’s openness to our ideas. When CEOs, senior executives, and managers use active listening skills there is a positive impact on team performance and engagement and an increase in faster, better decision making.
Take a moment today to truly listen — it could be the difference that transforms your team’s dynamics!
